I bought this mic specifically for db function. I enter my daughter in cheerleading competitions. I don't know if you were at the cheerleading competition, but the music is LOUD and distorted. I have this microphone on a Sony Handycam FDR-AX53. The ability to lower the dB allows me to post videos directly to YouTube without feeling the need to edit the audio. Something I have not dared to do before. I'm not a pro and I do it as a hobby, but even I hate it when you start watching a video and the sound is so loud you hit the volume button. The db(0, -10, -20) function is great. I've found -10 to be a good setting for what I'm recording (inside convention centers/arenas), as well as for outdoor sporting events or concerts. I've tried all 3 settings and there is a noticeable difference. It definitely works. The only thing I'd like to see is Rode make and still have a mic with this feature on a smaller mic. This microphone is long and protrudes from the lens. It enters the frame when zooming out. I fixed it by adding the hot shoe adapter and moving it back. It also got him out of the way to get to the on-camera zoom controls.
