I bought this extension to get the same "just one cable" effect that you get with the LG 4K Ultra Fine monitor built for MacBook with my existing not-so-fancy monitor. I plugged in the Apple USB port. C Multiport digital AV adapter on the back of my monitor and connected power, HDMI and USB devices to keep everything out of sight, then I run this extension on the side so I have everything I need on hand my 15" MacBook Pro 2017. with a touch panel, this is an extension cable. Unexpected bonus: the cable matches the space gray color of my machine *perfectly*. However, like others, I had some initial issues with the cable. I found that at first it only supported power delivery - I couldn't get it to stream video through the plug in the adapter, however I eventually found that the orientation (which side up) of the cable plug matters for some reason, it seems also to play a role which of the 4 USB C ports on my MacBook I plug the cable in. But now that the seam side of the connector is facing down and the cable is in the left one plugged into the connector closest to the screen, it works perfectly and consistently every time.
