This is a gift for a 10 year old boy. He has a cell phone but my son doesn't. Even from a cell phone, sometimes making a call is impossible due to a hurricane, power outage, zombie apocalypse, or other common inconveniences. In these situations you need a couple of fourth graders with walkie-talkie experience. Once these future heroes learned to use them indoors, they were sent outside to see how far they would transmit clearly. Back at the house, the children confirmed that they were "doing really well even from a distance”.
