Review on Cuisinart Aura Silver Stainless Steel Stovetop Tea Kettle: 2 Qt, CTK-SS17N - Sleek and Efficient by Brian Nelson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for induction hobs but not so good for radiant/direct hobs

So hey I've owned this kettle for 5 years now, use it 2-3 times a day with no problems whatsoever, rated 1-4 by reviewers stars were specified. But those negative reviews were pretty specific as opposed to the positive reviews which generally said the kettle looked nice. I agree. I think it looks very good but kudos to the negative reviewers as I think I have a partial answer as to why some of us are lucky with it and others not so much. For starters, who really reads teapot instructions? Well, some reviewers did, and those who used the recommended heat setting to boil water seem to have done better than the rest of us, who turned on the heat under the kettle to quickly get that first cup of joe to cook, or this first . Cup of tea. (and yes I know boiling water ruins tea leaves because my dad was crazy about his tea) So why did we have different experiences with this teapot? The short answer, which I think is simple: I use an induction cooktop, not direct electric heating or a gas burner. I chose this kettle precisely because it is suitable for induction. This means that although it is made of stainless steel, it has a lower chromium content and higher carbon content than other stainless steels. Higher carbon content equals more rust. Incidentally, most stainless steel will rust if left wet long enough. Stainless steel sometimes needs some air to do its job with stainless steel. In addition, boiling water in a vessel suitable for induction does not cause high thermal stresses throughout the vessel that can be caused by a direct incident heat source. This combination of high heat stress and higher carbon content leads me to believe reviewers had legitimate complaints of overly hot kettle handles and premature rusting. One reviewer who said the handle burned out and fell into the kettle really needs a stove top fire suppression system. (and yes, I have the right to say that I recently retired after a 40-year career as a professional firefighter). In summary, this kettle works surprisingly well when used on an induction hob, but I suspect it's not as well-suited to those who need to boil water quickly using traditional stovetops.
