Review on πŸ“» USA SSB 12/24V CB Radio - President McKinley by Christopher Clearfield

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Small but multifunctional radio!

This is how the Unident BC980SSB should have been. Pros 1) Small, good size for a Ford Escape or other small SUV 2) Includes all the features of the Uniden BC980SSB 3) Seems to draw more activity than the Uniden BC980SSB, but I've also switched to a Midland 12-2442 antenna. Cons 1) Buttons are a little hard to navigate, Uniden BC980SSB does a little better with dedicated buttons. 2) I am receiving oscillator noise through the antenna. Radio President McKinley! On my Uniden BC980SSB I don't hear any noticeable hum from the alternator at all! 3) The display is slightly better than the Uniden BC980SSB and now I can barely see the numbers on the display in polarized sunglasses. In any case, there should be a real-time clock automatic dimmer with better lighting, similar to car radios. My setup: Ford Escape with sunroof. Speakers (external speakers always seem to be much better). Initially, I got erratic SWR when holding the mic or touching the CB radio body. I then attached custom 10 AWG stranded green wire to the chassis and attached a ground screw with crimped/soldered connectors to the fuse box. After accidentally trimming 15 feet of length for another test site with little success, I found that wrapping the excess near the fuse box in a 4- to 6-inch diameter coil stopped any fluctuating SWR and kept the SWR on channel 1 brought to 1.0! I later found out that the sunroof probably caused the bottom layer to decrease, so the spiral bottom probably acts as an extra metallic bottom layer. I then set the SWR of channel 40 slightly lower than channel 1 when using SSB. After all this I found the CB to be very well calibrated and sensitive and the ASC function works much better now! The only constant problem is that I get alternator noise with this unit! The ferrite bead on the positive power wire doesn't help much, but it seems a little better. Antenna cable and microphone pulled out without improvement. I had no oscillator noise on the Uniden BC980SSB so assumed that this radio is just a lot more sensitive, which is probably a good thing. Or the manufacturer has to recalibrate. shrug.
