I think I received a used item. When I opened it, tiny hairs were already in the unit and the blades weren't turning. batteries and you're done. I really wanted to get rid of my frizzy hair, so I ignored the fact that it already contained someone else's hair (approximately). It's pretty hard to figure out, but the key is to make really small strands and not try to run too much. lots of hair through. It got rid of all my fried ends and I didn't have to trim the bowl. One star off because I bought it used and another star off because it's quite difficult to maintain. Not ergonomic, whatever it is. I think I have arthritis now :(
