Wow. Installation took 15 minutes, I'm very happy with the result. As recommended, I watched two short tutorial videos on YouTube by searching "BMW X5 door handle". Both videos used tools to pry off the door panels, which I didn't have, so I used a wide flathead screwdriver instead (the scuffs on the leather handle were preinstalled, not from the screwdriver). The outer leather panel came off in about 30 seconds. Be careful not to bend the plastic when removing the outer panel. I then removed the 3 screws using the T20 and T10 bits I already had and the inner panel of the panel was removed. The replacement plate fitted like a glove and the leather case snapped back into place. Note: This was my first time attempting to work on a car, but I'm a little dexterous. Just make sure you have the right tools (T10 and T20 bits and a removal tool) and installation will be very quick and easy.
