I've learned the hard way that many gauges aren't accurate enough to be useful. My experience with layers is no exception. My old torpedo laser stopped working and I needed a replacement. I settled on the 40-6184 based on less negative reviews and personal experience with my 24 inch Johnson beam level being accurate enough for my use. I bought the level knowing I had a good chance of getting it back. I was pleasantly surprised to find acceptable horizontal accuracy. This is a 10" level and I had to put a .003" shim under one end to get the most accurate reading I could visually distinguish (turn end to end). Projected to 10 feet, which is approximately a 1/32 inch error. Not perfect, but it's not a machine class level. I'm sure I'll introduce as many or even more errors reading a level in a typical application. For reference, my 24" Johnson level required a 0.005" washer. At 10 feet, that's just under 1/32 inch. The vertical plane was more than acceptable, but Johnson provided a calibration facility for it. I put it where I need it. Finally, I checked the accuracy of the laser in the Y-axis in relation to the plane. As long as the point is larger than you want, only work in its center. I have a flat surface from 8 feet to +/- 0.003 inches. The laser spot was exactly level over 8 feet away. I don't have a reliable way to test the accuracy of the beam on the vertical and x-axis with the same reliability as on the horizontal y-axis. Can't speak for durability and agree with previous review of laser switch reliability. The quality of its design doesn't match the overall craftsmanship of the level. Aside from being heavy I have no other complaints and would recommend this level. Just check it for accuracy when you receive it. There may be differences from batch to batch. If you really don't need a laser, there are better torpedo level options in the same price range, but this was the best I could find in a torpedo laser level and I'd be willing to pay twice as much to have it to get a better one. I give it 5 stars based on its performance compared to what I would reasonably expect from a laser level at this price point.
