Great product for the price! I was lucky enough to find a bobby pin right in the middle of where I was going to drop off the shelves! So the inner mounting hole was screwed directly into the stud. For the other four screws, I marked all the holes with a pencil and level, used a 5/16 bit (8mm recommended), and hand screwed in the white drywall anchors. When installed, the shelves were not perfectly perpendicular to the wall due to an imperfect bracket. To keep them from tipping down off the wall I flipped the brackets so the shelves are now angled slightly up but this is perfect for me. Finally, no, there aren't holes in the metal brackets that match the holes in the bottom of the shelf. I wanted to drill them myself, but then found that I could screw them directly into metal with a little muscle power. They look great and feel totally secure.
