I rarely solder so I'm sure the $40-100 station is a very good upgrade over my $6 Wal-Mart 30w soldering iron , but I can not justify the price . I've had my current iron for about 7 years and the tip has finally failed. Puddles no longer form and the solder practically no longer melts. I ordered them because I realized they were slightly smaller than what came with the iron. However, there were no problems attaching this new tip to the iron. I plugged the iron into an outlet and the tip got hot much faster than the old one and tinned well. It also has a thinner tip than the old tip which I like. Great purchase IMO for occasional soldering.
