So now I have two new EF-S 18-135 US nano USM lenses. and a new EF-S 18-135 IS STM. (long story another time) These models are very confusing as the nano USM is often more expensive and sold as an upgrade. Both lenses weigh the same, the STM is slightly lighter. The barrel diameter of the STM is slightly smaller, although the lenses and optics are the same size. Both have metal mounting rings, manual zoom locks, IS and AF. Both appear to be comparable in terms of image quality. So which one to buy? What is the difference? The Nano USM can also be equipped with a zoom module (sold separately). It is equipped with a Nano USM motor, which is a mix of STM/USM technology. It focuses about half a second faster when moving or shooting fast, but with less smooth movements than the STM. In addition, the motor is very quiet, but slightly louder than the STM. Opinion: NANO USM is probably better for photographers who prefer stills or action shots. And who needs a zoom module. The STM is very quiet and you have to put your ear close to hear it. Focuses slightly slower than USM but with a VERY SMOOTH transition for VIDEO. This lens is still good for photography and action shots, but focuses a bit slower due to smoother transition times. . You can't go wrong with this.
