Review on Disposable Cold Brew Coffee Filters by Chef Deane

Honest Review - Pros and Cons

I bought these filters just because I wanted to try them, paid full price and didn't get any reward for the review. I took the time to write this review because I initially wanted to use these filters multiple times. I used to use a brand that came with a popular cold brew system but they were expensive and these are more affordable. I bought a medium size so I used a 2 liter jug to brew coffee. I used 2 cups of coffee (I like Peets Big Bang and it's pre-ground) and 6 cups of water. I brewed coffee on the counter for 12 hours and then in the fridge for another 12 hours overnight. My first cons: The jug I use is 2 liters and a filter bag full of coffee is higher than 6 cups of water in a jug. . I push the bag as low as I can and try to tilt it as much as I can, but I still have 1.5-2 inches above the water. That surprised and annoyed me when I first brewed coffee with these filters. I felt like I wasted some ground coffee. The next 2 times I left more room on top of the bag, removed some of the coffee before adding water, and also poured water over the coffee before tying the bag so at least the coffee was wet on top so I could crush it could it. I think I need to find a wider/bigger pitcher but I didn't want to buy a new one. I think I could use that big plastic monster from the toddy system with a rubber stopper, but I hated that thing. Okay, another downside: the pockets are so narrow that it's difficult to fill them. I use a funnel, but I'll tell you what, the first time I climbed! I had a rimmed measuring cup and figured that would do and it might be if someone else held the filter bag open for me. What a mess!. I stopped my work and found the funnel, but I had to take the time to wash and dry it because it was in the litter box. I don't recall reading the suggestion that I would need a funnel so a word of warning would be nice. Pros: Coffee tastes great! You also get a lot of filters for your money. The filters are much stronger than "other brands" so you can actually squeeze out the coffee liquid. A drawstring top is much nicer than wrapping a zip tie around a full paper filter bag. How does coffee taste? When I used Toddy's filter and directions, the concentrate was more concentrated, so I added more water to my coffee cup, but their formula is 12 ounce bags of ground coffee for 7 cups of water, so it took a little less than for two. weeks. With the Alto Cold Brew Filter Bags, I used 2 cups (about half a 12-ounce bag) of ground coffee for 6 cups of water, and the concentrate took less water to brew a drinkable cup of coffee and lasted about a week. Find a wider pitcher so the coffee is submerged all the way, and if so I'll probably update my review. I love these filter bags.
