Review on πŸ‘Ÿ Merrell Glove Trail Running Sport Shoes by Muharik Khalifa

Doesn't live up to its name anymore

I've been a fan of Merrell Trail Gloves since I bought my first pair in 2012. Then I wanted a minimal shoe for everyday use and easy walking. I tried the Vibram FiveFingers but quickly gave up because they generated too much unwanted talk and were too much of a hassle to keep clean (since you don't wear socks with them). After meeting FiveFinger I was so glad I found the Merrell Trail Glove. They gave me the same barefoot feel but with a standard look. They served me for many years until I finally had to replace them. I then switched to the Trail Glove 3. The 3's were equally good, although I had to scale them down by half. After a year and a half and a lot more outings than before, the 3 Series are finally worn out. I tried to find replacement parts for 3s but couldn't find one in my size. So I reluctantly bought the Trail Glove 4. When I put them on for the first time, it was immediately clear that these are not the trail gloves I loved so much. They were narrower, with a flatter toe box and a MUCH stiffer sole. I didn't like the new lacing system either. I got it back almost the same day but wanted to give it some time. After a few weeks of non-stop use, the upper has ripped a bit and is now more comfortable. But the hardship problem remains. One of the things I loved about the original trail gloves and sandals in general is how you can "feel" the surface you're walking on. It gives you a better sense of your surroundings and makes you feel connected to your surroundings. It's nice to feel the textures of the surfaces you walk on (e.g. concrete pavement, asphalt road, dirt track, etc.). With the Trail Gloves 4 this is no longer possible. On the plus side, if you're walking on a hard surface and stepping on a small rock, it doesn't hurt as much. But with minimal footwear, part of the experience is knowing your path and choosing your steps wisely. I agree that Merrell makes shoes like this, but they should have given it a different name. The term "glove" indicates that it will fit as a whole: it will be flexible and will not require breaking in. Despite the barefoot stamp, the Merrell Trail Glove 4 is no longer this shoe. UPDATE (March 18, 2019) After 200 miles of walking, mostly on pavement and not in the rain, the upper material has developed cracks where the toe box flexes (see photo). This stuff seems to have a few layers on it, so it's not a structural issue (yet), but it ruins her look. My Trail Glove 3 gloves have put in 350 miles but only because the sole has worn down - the upper still looked amazing when I took them off. . I assume it will be reversed at 4s but we'll see in another 100 miles!
