Rigid. My daughter loves it but it is not machine washable. We use it at school, so it's terrible, it can't be washed. I tried washing it before use and it took forever/days to dry. And I don't have time to just let it dry over the weekend. I just kept it in the water for as long as I tried to push/twist it. Washing is not recommended. My friend said she has a sleeping mat that she can't wash and that uses Lysol, but it has a lot of chemicals on it. It works for now, but next year I'll look for one that washes. But the memory foam makes it comfortable. Oh, one more flaw. In order for the blanket to stay on the child, it really needs to be attached. The blanket does not have a crest like other sleeping pads, so does not take baby's body into account by lifting the required amount of fabric. Because the bottom is memory foam, it just doesn't perform like a sleeping bag. So 4 stars for home use with 1 star for no blanket and zipper. 2 stars for the school blanket because it just isn't perfect.
