Ideal for my (very) niche application

I ordered this item for a very specific application. Dedicated focal length measurement tool for hobbyist laser engravers/cutters. I found out that someone has devised a simple mount for a set of modified calipers that mount to the side of the laser head. My particular laser has a fixed focal length, so to set the focus point on the work piece, the head height needs to be adjusted to 20mm (fixed laser focal length). light and easy to modify. Being plastic, they met BOTH of the above requirements. It is very light and the modification needed (cutting off about 3 inches from the end of the "beam") was very easy. I used an oscillating multi-tool with a metal cutting blade installed and it cut very easily. Once installed, I can move the moving part of the caliper down and use the depth gauge to measure the distance from the bottom of the laser head to the workpiece. This is a direct reading of value as the mount is designed to accommodate the end of the caliper beam level with the underside of the laser head. I am attaching a photo of it for reference. The downside for other applications is that it can only be read to the nearest tenth of a millimeter (0.1mm instead of the 0.01mm of the calipers). I have one too). For my use this doesn't bother me as there are some differences in the stubs anyway. That makes me "close enough for government work" and that's all I expected! I need a set of probes as I already have some lying around so I won't comment on those.

Pros
  • โ–ถZERO FUNCTION: For differential measurements. The robust and portable caliper is designed in such a way that it can be set to zero with the push of a button and a new measurement can be started at any point on the caliper. Scale (and please reset when you start a new measurement)
