quality control? Okay for about a year.

I LOVE this little CHEMEX. but . I suspect it's a quality control issue. I've had two of these smaller ones in just over 24 months. (Chemex replaced the first) My first (and only) Chemex was bought in 1971. I recently gave it to my son-in-law who was delighted. Almost 50 years old, numerous moves, several new wooden collars. It doesn't have a chip and still makes great coffee. To say I have experience with this product is an understatement. As I am very old and there is only one coffee drinker in my house, the smaller size seemed ideal to me. The glass pen is great for arthritic hands and it was a smaller version of my original 50 year old Chemex. Then a small leak formed in the bottom "seam". At first I thought I was just a little sloppy. After the 4th-5th time the leak grew very slowly and one day I went into the kitchen and found coffee all over my countertop. I took out my magnifying glass and actually saw the perfect little "hole" in the stitching. The size of a very small pea. I contacted Chemex and Revain and they reluctantly replaced it for me. Everything was good . until this happened. Just in time, in the exact same spot, and about 14 months later, the same thing happened again. Exactly the same scenario. A very small hole in the same place. This indicates a quality control issue. What to do? To be honest, the replacement was quite a hassle the first time. I'm not sure I want to relive all of that drama, emails, phone calls, etc. But I could I am a 77 year old Chemex fanatic.

Pros
  • CHEMEX Pour-over allows coffee to be covered and chilled to be reheated without sacrificing flavor
Cons
  • boring packaging
