Review on πŸ”Š Dayton Audio Quad Feet DAEX25Q-4 25mm Exciter 20W 4 Ohm by Jerome Pritchard

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent mid-range model when used correctly

I've tried quite a few different Dayton exciters for different applications. I chose them for a medium sized DML speaker project using 3mm birch plywood after the 8 ohm flat pack drivers I first tried proved inadequate. They match perfectly the RMS power requirements into 4 ohms with the amp I'm using and compared to similarly spec models they have the best FR look for Dayton specs and the largest coils. The spring loaded terminals were a definite bonus. I pushed them hard and put out a clean dyno tested output of 35W RMS and they sound fantastic. Fair warning - don't expect or try to get massive bass from them (or any exciter in most applications). If you try to push them too hard with low cutoff well below 100Hz you will quickly clip/overheat the coils and crosses and end up with a burned or dead block. I have a 20Hz subsonic filter and they intersect at about 100Hz with a 24dB slope. These are light full-range drivers and you expect a lot from them even at high volumes. If you strip them of the low frequency tension they will perform 100% better in the rest of the range (and if you build a DML you still won't find a substrate that delivers both good low frequencies and warm high frequencies). . It's not magic. If you want powerful bass, you need to high-pass filter it and drive it with a dedicated woofer or subwoofer. If you want to run them through full range, just be careful not to overdo the bass control or turn it up too loud and you'll be fine. with damping they sound excellent and easily exceed the scream level of an average living room without distortion. When properly controlled, they sound clean and open, with good dynamics and visualization. I've run them on everything from smooth jazz and blues to pop/rock/electronic. They get even better and brighter if you can add some EQ to them to soften the 11kHz dip and sharp drop above 16kHz, and again crank up the low frequencies they want to burn out. Overall I am very happy with them and would recommend them.

Pros
  • 4 ohm impedance for use with small Class D amps
Cons
  • Expensive
