I was looking for an encrypted drive to store confidential files and came across this device. It seemed to fill the bill with 256-bit hardware encryption at a decent price, so I took the plunge and bought it. I'm not too tech savvy and skimp on all kinds of M.2 devices, so my first mistake was to buy an M.2 2280 SSD that I thought would work in the device. That does not work. It's the wrong connector and it won't even connect to the device. So I had to go out and learn about M.2 drives and their different types. Little did I know there are four different types of M.2 drives. The encryption device states that it uses an M.2 B-key SSD, and yes, that's what actually fits and works with this device. But you don't want to go longer than 42mm, so 2242 is the perfect size for that. Now finding a B-Key SSD is not easy, especially since in many cases SSDs are not on this list. What's in the box: A tiny screwdriver to remove the four tiny screws on the case to remove the end caps so you can pry out the guts to install an SSD with M.2 B key (42mm max, so get a 2242 SSD). There is also one more screw in the case and a screw mount in a small plastic bag to attach the SSD to the encryption device. And of course instructions. Yes, LIST. A sheet of paper with basic instructions for the initial password and how to change the password and what the little LED lights mean. That's all. Simple and straightforward once you have the right SSD. Yes, and a USB 3.0 cable is also included to connect the device to a computer. After putting everything back together and plugging it into my computer, I couldn't get the "initial" or "factory" password to unlock it. Device. So I followed the password reset instructions and it worked. Warning: Be sure to change the password from 0 to something else BEFORE putting any data on the hard drive. If you forget your password and need to reset it, all data on the drive will be lost. So set it up with your own password before putting the data on the hard drive. After unlocking the drive, go to Administrator or Computer Management, then Disks, initialize the drive and format it. Once that's done, you're good to go. Just press the "LOCK" button to lock it when you're done and enter your password to unlock it and press UNLOCK until the green light comes on. It's pretty easy. My total cost for 240GB of 256-bit hardware encrypted storage is $57.98 plus tax. Not bad at all compared to turnkey systems for sale. Pros: Inexpensive and works well. I have no idea if there is a RAM limit for this device. I'm currently using a 240 gigabyte SSD and it's working fine. Sturdy aluminum case, everything you need to open the device to install the SSD is included. Be careful, the screws on the case are SMALL! I suggest loosening the screws above the small box so that when it falls it falls into the box and not onto the floor. Cons: Initial password "0" didn't work. The number keys on the case are black and the numbers are black so it's very hard to see them. You may need a bright light like me to be able to read the numbers on the buttons and I also had to carry a magnifying glass. It's quite small, but if you have good eyesight, don't worry! The last thing I have is that the USB cable is very short. Overall, I would definitely recommend this device for your encryption needs. I gave it four stars mainly because the original password didn't work and I'm having trouble seeing the numbers. The numbers must be bright white plastic and must not be painted on the numbers.
