Laser Compromise: Video Projectors

This review is for the Optoma HZ39HDR. On paper, this projector ticks all of my boxes. This is a gaming projector with low input lag, 4000 lumens of brightness for ambient viewing, and a laser source for years of projector performance. All from Optoma for $1199 (my price). The sad reality is that you have to make compromises. It seems so. I have returned and rejected two of these projectors. Both projectors had issues with focus uniformity. This means that the entire image cannot be focused at once. With my first projector, I found that if I focused on the bottom center of the image, the top right corner would blur and vice versa. I tested in several environments. To top it off, the right side of the projector turned green around the white pixels, giving them a tint. Given the balance between focus areas and most of the content, this was fine. But it bothered me so I replaced it. The second projector had a more consistent focus (top left corner this time, but not as bad). However, the entire image had an upward curve and a curved slope. Tested again in multiple environments. This made it almost impossible to center the screen. The lower right edge yellowed and disappeared in each white-accented scene. Unacceptable. He too returned. At this price point, a little research will show you that lens manufacturing problems are varied and common. They cannot disturb you. Both projectors can display an upscaled 4k input signal with a native 1080P resolution with absolute appeal. Both looked good overall. Motion in games was smooth and colors were acceptable. The brightness was certainly right for some of the ambient lighting. Perhaps these issues will not be decisive for you. I give him 3 stars. It's still one of the cheapest ways to get long-term performance from a laser projector, and possibly the only gaming laser projector available (other than its short-throw cousin). Just be aware of the potential downsides before buying.
