I didn't notice an unpleasant chemical smell from the first set of HEPA filters, so the unit has worked well for a year. When we received the replacement HEPA filter set, there was a chemical smell that we couldn't stand. I have contacted Honeywell customer service. I was told a few months ago that there was a bad batch of filters. They let me ship the faulty filters back (at their expense) and sent me a replacement set. The new set stinks too. I found online that this is a common problem people have with this product. I'm not one to complain unless there's a good reason for it. An air purifier should make the air better, not worse. I have now exposed the filters to the sun and am hoping that the smell will improve in a few days. If not, it all goes in the trash can. Consumer Reports highly recommended this filtering system, so I'm also very disappointed in them.
