Update 7/6/2021 It just keeps getting better. There are so many hidden gems in TWAIN DS even without the NOGUI option and control over the Curve Flatten and Laser Targeting features. Plymor offers a "B013IVWJP6 Clear Acrylic Open Book Stand" available here at Revain that holds the book in a clear stand that's perfect for holding it open without using your fingers to open it. The only distraction is that it "warps" the left and right side images, and TWAIN DS has no automatic way to "warp" the images so that they are rectangular. But even the distorted images of the bookend scan are almost perfect, the light is reflected without glare and the images are easy to read. It's also pretty quick to turn pages, relying on auto-detection of page turns to create more images. No more buttons or pedals. KEVJES makes a very wide "B08L6TJPPZ Clear Acrylic Tray with Metal Handles" that can be turned over and placed on an open and weighted book or pressed on the pages to stop them curling. Everyone. The K21 can then scan through the clear acrylic base and become crystal clear. This compensates for the lack of curve flattening in TWAIN DS. Original review from 07/02/2021 I have a Viisan K21 model. He has a solid powerful weight, which is pretty balanced. Its finish is like a nice DSLR, and it doesn't have the soft color that's so common on many capture devices. The plastic is hard, not metal, but high quality. The weight helps a lot with carrying and holding in place when set up for a handle. Extendable swing arm with LED light and Ambrella(?) or Sony sensor platform is strong and stays in place. I already had the DSCam software and TWAIN data source driver installed and everything was quickly discovered and configured. I already had Irfanview and Scan Papyrus licensed and installed and immediately went to the Pick and Get menu on my Windows 7 x64 machine. Windows had Twain DSM pre-installed since Windows XP and the new DS source was immediately available for my TWAIN enabled application. I was a little disappointed that Scan Papyrus opened the TWAIN DS dialog to select source options and required one step: click the (Get and Export) button to bring the images from the TWAIN dialog back to the TWAIN application to move. But it works. I hope that some registry changes will make the NOGUI TWAIN setting available as Scan Papyrus pulls TWAIN images from other data sources without a GUI dialog box for a seamless experience. It appears that Scan Papyrus can make changes to settings at query time without requiring a GUI dialog. So I can only assume that TWAIN DS ignores or doesn't provide the NOGUI option. I hope the support team can figure it out. But still this comes closest to the BEST solution, I've ever seen for a book scanning platform. The TWAIN support itself is phenomenal. but as I said. I would have preferred the leg option during the grip. I can set up a combination of settings where a double tap on the keyboard opens the TWAIN GUI, captures an image and immediately exports it. but it's just a kind of Kludge that I'd rather not see. The combination of Scan Papyrus 21.3 from Amsterdam and K21 fits almost perfectly to the rest of the world outside of China. It's sleek, minimalist, and does almost everything the same as the original native Vissan desktop software, without the distractions associated with a newer specialized software package. Two things that are a bit disappointing apart from Nogui: 1. The LEDs don't light up when using TWAIN DS, which I don't find surprising, but if you want the TWAIN DS GUI to be displayed it would be a good idea to check the LED lighting box. Or provide a separate application in the taskbar to control the LED lighting. (Update: The scattered SONY dot icon at the top of the stand is a capacitive "touchpad" for activating the LED lighting. There's no other obvious way to turn the LED lighting on and off using the Viisan OfficeCam software, although it's handy is. )2. Side smoothing no longer works when using TWAIN DS. if you want the GUI to be displayed it would be a good idea to check the box for the FLAT option. Or provide a separate system tray application to control the FLAT option. I guess, that these are minor issues that could be solved quickly and easily if they had an SDK or OCX control for developers or users to write this themselves. but be that as it may, it can still be used. I don't know how to access the device driver API to enable the LED lighting or the FLAT option (called "Curve Flatten"). It would be such a small thing to turn it into a perfect product. You only need a small taskbar app to toggle these functions outside of the TWAIN protocol. set and forget. Scanning itself via USB2.0 is very fast. and the image quality at 21 MP is impressive. There's even an AutoFocus button in the TWAIN DS GUI dialog box.
