I've only bought Otter for my smartphones and they've always protected them. I've never had a cracked screen and usually the otter breaks in front of the phone so I can replace the case. This case feels very durable, but also adds a lot of bulk (balanced weight) to the phone. It is more like an exoskeleton, while my previous cases had a hard case with rubber coating. With the hard shell exposed and very little rubber (mostly around the edges) the phone now slips out of my fingers easily. I've dropped it a few times just because it slipped out of my hand. For me this is very unusual. If in previous cases I've confidently held the phone with one hand, in this case I have to hold it with two hands to feel at least a little as secure as before. I never realized how critical the rubber sleeve is. Time will tell how well this case holds up, but with the increased bulkiness and smooth (non-sticky) backing, I already foresee this phone dropping more often.
