USB cables don't last forever and as I currently work in a car where I plug and unplug my phone 20+ times a day to Android Using car to travel to different places, my previous foot long USB charging cable wore out after a few weeks of use. Why has Android Auto lost contact with my phone for two days? Hopefully it's a cable and not my machine's USB input. Success! I don't know how long they will last but I bought three and have a spare in the car just in case.
