Review on πŸšͺ North States Toddleroo 47.85" Wide Swing & Lock Gate: Secure Hardware Mount for Standard Stairways by Anthony Grover

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good overall BUT gentle rocking doesn't lock the latch - disappointing.

I bought this grid to protect my kids from dangers in the kitchen while cooking/baking; and keep the dog inside when we're away for a few hours to give him more room to roam rather than in his cage - the dog is why we wanted a higher gate. All in all, this gate will serve its purpose. I only have one big minus point, but it's big enough that I can honestly say this gate is ok (3 stars). ADVANTAGES: - They are big enough to hold the dog without worrying about him jumping. - Since it's attached with hardware (no snap-on bracket), I know it's rattle-proof from kids and dogs. The no-threshold feature is very handy, especially for stairs (we bought one for this location, but a different model). even our 3 year old who is very smart and adventurous) - The extra latch that only allows the door to swing in one direction is nice too. We skipped this element for our kitchen doors, but we really like using it for the gates on our stairs. In general, the quality of the material seems to be good. I've heard from some that they think the plastic snap can break, but I have a feeling you have to be pretty aggressive with it for that to happen. The time will show. CONS: - Installation is easy to understand but almost impossible to align everything as it should to get the perfect soft rock and bar advertised and shown in the product video. The included template initially seemed like a great feature, but I've found that if you don't have a perfectly placed entryway and level floors (our very old house doesn't!), you'll need to make adjustments (e.g. more holes ). within your walls, which we did). No matter what adjustments we make (and we made a few on both doors we bought), the latch just doesn't fit properly for easy closing - instead we have to push the latch and lift it. on the gate (like opening the lock) to ensure it snaps back into place securely. This was a disappointing discovery. If we just try to close it as advertised (gently or with some force), only the top latch engages and the bottom one doesn't (see image). - After just a few attempts to close and latch, the hardware is pretty much broken. It probably won't affect/break usability, but who knows - it makes me a little skeptical about latency over time at best. Is this a sign that the latch has worn out after so many times? We have to wait. Many of the benefits listed were reasons why we considered this gate an advantage over gates we have tried in the past. But the easy twist, close and latch advertised for this gate was one of the main reasons I went with it - previous gates gave us so many problems opening and closing (something you obviously want to have as a problem) . for children, but not for adults!). I really want this gate to be our last as many others have let us down, either because they have become too difficult to manage over time or because they were of poor design and quality from the start. I can live with these gates if the only problem is one of the major bugs listed, but since they didn't work as advertised I have to say I'm not **quite** happy beforehand. If it lasts longer than a year with our frequent use, I'll happily give it a star for long-term quality.

Pros
  • High test results for hold and durability
Cons
  • Not as thick as others
