I don't usually take the time to review it in detail but this time I really feel the need to share my experience. I've been running for over 5 years but started getting serious about running weekly about a year ago (only run 16 miles a week and now about 30 miles a week). I live in South Florida and it is very hot here most of the year making long runs very difficult. I've spent the last few months training for the Miami Half Marathon feeling good and ready for the race, and on race day the weather was getting hot and I was sweating so profusely that I didn't realize my GU and water weren't doing enough recover, my lost sodium, and finally, after about 10 miles, I had to start taking walk breaks until I had all the symptoms of hyponatremia (low sodium - confusion, fatigue, and headaches). I set a goal to run a half marathon in under 2 hours and finished in 2 hours and 13 minutes. After that I got very frustrated and started reading more about what happened until I spoke to several professional runners who mentioned salt pills. I stumbled upon these pills and decided to sign up for another half marathon with my wife last Sunday (half marathon 305). I took 2 pills 30 minutes before the race, then 2 pills at mile four and then 2 pills every 3 miles. I also took my GUs after the 4 miles between salt pills and felt great throughout the race (the temp was about the same as the first race). I don't think it's possible to attribute my success in any sporting event to just one factor, but I do know that it had a huge impact on how I felt during the race. I ended up finishing in 1:59:24, but this time I only wanted to finish in 2:05. From now on I use these pills on every hot weather 8 mile run, so all my Saturday runs. Please note that not everyone loses sodium through sweat in the same way, and this will make a difference for people with a high sweat rate like me. My wife runs with me every day and at the end of a 10 mile run in over 80F she is still almost completely dry so she doesn't need these pills. I didn't find anything that really helped me fight the fatigue on hot days, so it was trial and error until I found something that worked. I hope my story helps other people with similar problems. Happy running!
