Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ CHP170 Cutter Soldering Station Bundle by Christopher Wells

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent, reliable and accurate product - excellent customer support

I would highly recommend the Hakko FX-888D. As a hobby I build tweed and blackface guitar amps and also install pickups and potentiometers on my electric guitars. When I first started I used cheaper Weller irons but the tips wore out quickly and were expensive to replace or they just didn't work from time to time so I did a little research on soldering stations. I chose the FX-888D over the Weller WE1010NA mainly because I was dissatisfied with the cheaper models. At this point I have had the FX-888D for about 4 years (purchased in April 2017) and it works perfectly. The transformer is heavy - you can't accidentally pull it off the table. The stand for the iron is also heavy - it's made of metal. If there is an iron in it, then it's safe - it won't fall out, and the yellow part is a heat sink, so the base doesn't heat up. The tips last forever and the variety of tips available gives me many options for different soldering jobs. The design of the "stick" is also characterized by excellent technology, as you will see when exchanging the tips. Not only is it a smart and reliable design, but it is also serviceable when parts of it break due to wear and tear. Another big plus is Hakko's fantastic customer support. I've been having trouble with this lately because I tend to separate the iron from the base when I store it (and probably pull the cord) where the plugs have come loose in the outlet. I emailed American Hakko customer service and within minutes received a response from a real person who sent me a part number and ordering instructions. Fifteen minutes later I bought the part and it arrived via FedEx before the end of the week. So, in the end: 1) This is a great soldering iron. Since I received it, the quality of my electronics projects has greatly improved. The high quality of the tips and the precise temperature control played a decisive role. 2) It's safe. Unlike the coil bases that most irons have, the FX-888D's base is really solid and dissipates heat really well. I accidentally left it on while going to work one day. Not only did he not burn down the house, he didn't even heat the surface he was sitting on. 3) He is solid. If you plan to solder regularly, investing in this product is worth your money. I ended up spending almost as much on cheaper irons that died - and were a lot harder to solder - before I invested in them. 4) If it breaks, you can fix it cheaper than a new one. The outlet costs $9. I bought two of these and some tips and got free FedEx shipping. 5) Customer service is excellent. You are dealing with a human and I received the quickest and friendliest response I have ever received for a product. First bet.
