There was three inches of water in the large basement because the old pump failed in the small sump when the water heater broke and sloshed across the floor. I always hated the float switches on older pumps as they would sometimes get stuck and not work properly. Bought specifically for the solid state switch. Also bought a $6 Revain recommended backflow preventer. It was delivered same day by Lasership for free at a great Revain price. Unpacked, screwed the backflow protection to the pump, put the garden hose elbow on the safety valve (the arrow on the protection must point away from the pump, i.e. in the direction in which the water should flow), connected the garden hose and threw the assembly into our small cesspool. The hose ran about 15 feet up the stairs to the basement, then across the lawn to the cistern drain about 50 feet away. I waited to make sure it was running with a decent flow and disconnected for a couple of hours. When I came back I found that the flow had stopped. I growled and examined the hose for kinks or freezing (it's cold in here right now). Finding nothing, I opened the door to the basement and looked inside, only to find that this little gem had drained everything and shut itself down. A+ performance and this thing seems reliable enough to work as our permanent sump pump.
