Pretty decent camera

Instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired. JPEGs are excellent. RAW images show significant distortions if you process them in anything other than the RAW File Converter application, which should have been included on the CD that came with the camera, but isn't. At least if you're looking for a Mac version. I had to search and download it myself. While it corrects lens distortion, it's a mediocre RAW processor in every other way. The camera itself is very slow when saving RAW images. In the end I decided to shoot 90% of the RAW images in JPEG and the 10% of the RAW images I shoot I first process with a Fuji RAW to 16-bit TIFF converter. Save with the default settings (with the possible exception of white balance) and open these TIFF files in Adobe Camera Raw before running them in Photoshop if needed. At the same time, the camera is quite light and durable. Autofocus is excellent, which is good because the manual focus ring is clunky at best. Any settings you might need quick access to are accessible via the buttons on the back or top of the camera. It is very nice. The lens is exceptional (after software correction) for a camera in this or any other price range. Manual zoom is a million times better than any motorized zoom. Very easy to use. Auto exposure does not allow you to overexpose highlights, as is the case with most inexpensive cameras. This makes the two fully automatic modes quite useful. However, switching to shutter or aperture priority (or full manual control) is trivial. The lens stabilization is just amazing. Very clear images, even when shooting handheld and at maximum zoom in decent light. Most of the advertised special features that you won't find on other cameras are pretty clunky and useless, but as a lightweight camera for long hikes in tough terrain (which I mostly do) I find it a great alternative to a DSLR with a bunch of lenses that are difficult to carry. Overall I find this camera very flexible and easy to use for my needs. The picture quality is surprisingly good. I am much happier with this camera than I expected and expected to be very satisfied.
