Review on Datacolor SCK200 SpyderCHECKR 24 by Mike Bogan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

There is no need to go for the more expensive option if you are on a tight budget.

For those of you browsing here who are hesitant (like me) due to some negative reviews, I'd like to offer an additional point of view. 1.) This device is not made out of cheap cardboard. While not a hard hard plastic, it's not brittle "cardboard" and appears to be coated with some kind of plastic or vinyl coating, making it "strong enough" for the task. It comes with a plastic carrying case for travel and storage. There's a small risk of it bending if not handled properly, but if you're careful to store and transport it properly, you should be fine. 2. ) $50 for a piece of colored plastic may seem excessive, I must warn you. what you pay for color science and a material that delivers accurate colors despite glare and reflections. There are cheaper versions on eBay and Revain that appear to do the same thing, but you'll find they're less accurate in certain lighting conditions and DaVinci doesn't recognize these generic color checkers. Conversely, SpyderCHECKR is the least expensive option that seems to be recognized by the software. 3.) Another brand has a good case but I don't think it's worth the extra money for my needs. The SpyderCHECKR, on the other hand, also has a white balance palette. I use SpyerCheckR to compare cameras from different brands. For my first test today, I took my Canon t6s and Lumix G7 and shot a short scene. I was very impressed with the workflow of using SpyderCheckR with Davinci Resolve to generate 3D LUTS for each camera. I used the LUT in Premiere/lumetri to create the appropriate scenes. The process was pretty easy too. The result was a footage match that's "close enough" for me that I'm pretty sure my clients won't be able to tell the difference. Based on my previous unsuccessful attempts to manually match cameras, I feel this little piece of plastic has improved the quality of my output and speeded up my workflow. I've included my graded/ungraded quizzes for reference. If you have multiple camera brands, this is the cheapest Davinci-approved tool to ensure the colors of your footage match different camera brands. I highly recommend this device.
