Great start! - Homes & Habitats

As a new hamster owner, I read today's article Hamster Space Needs Wisdom and thought if an adult hamster needs this much space, surely a dwarf hamster could do with half twice as little (or less) . ). boy was i wrong! I started with a two tier Kaytee and just felt guilty about how small it was. My winter white was climbing and chewing on the poles and I was so afraid he would hurt himself. I still wanted to use my original home the way he was used to and I wanted to make this move with as little stress as possible, so we chose Kaytee and added that. In combination with both, we meet the absolute minimum space requirement. While my little one sleeps on the old side, he moves to the new side to play and feed. I have a feeling that once she starts smelling more like him, he'll switch sides more often. Pros: Size is the only habit I've found that comes close to meeting the requirements. Keep in mind that habits advertise living space, while the hamster community recommends a minimum of 450 square inches of floor space. And that number seems to keep growing. (I read about the 620 on the forums yesterday.) But it has the footprint needed to fit enough bedding for them to burrow into. I have a few houses, a sand bath, a pot, a digging corner, an exercise bike, and of course food and water. I will probably replace the ramp with a wooden ramp. He keeps it in - My runt immediately ran around the shelf trying to stick his head through the bars in every compartment he couldn't find a place in. However, this tells us to be careful that if you bend a wire during installation, it's important that you fix it! Easy to assemble - found this very easy to put together, this is Katie's second cage I've built in the last two weeks) I had trouble with the first one, this one I put together in 20 minutes, just follow the instructions and don't force anything and good is. I also noticed that others put the big top door as the minus sign and in the plus column. My friend hasn't let us stop him yet, this gives enough space to offer the hamster a cup or ball to transport to the playground or bathroom or home after play. I put my hand on the ramp to offer the seed and that was the best I got from him sitting on my arm, so the big door helps us get closer. Speaking of which, the plastic is flimsy, if you have a big climber/chewer they can climb to the top and chew, but you have to be determined to do it! The little plastic square that allows you to connect to other rails should be on the outside of the cage, but due to the way the wire sides connect it couldn't be installed as intended so chewable plastic is again inside interior. Also, this square popped up for me several times, and the tube popped out of the square. I check my connections every night. The door doesn't always close properly - when I close the top I actually have to slide the door in, or there's a gap either at the door or at the top where the roof connects to the wire. .Overall I give 4 because of the size, this house does the job. Since I believe someone at Kaytee reads all of their reviews, I hope you keep posting great homes. There's a gap in the market and you're ready to fill it!
