Review on πŸ”§ General Tools 142 English Plastic: Precision Hand Tool for All-Purpose Applications by Brad Schillings

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good, but not as good as the previous version. In some cases it is not possible to measure the depth.

After 30 years, my previous caliper was worn out and one of the "ears" used to measure inside broke off. So I ordered a new caliper. The old ones were gray and the new ones were black and yellow. It worked well for my first readings. But then I had to measure the depth, and the new caliper couldn't do that. Previously, depth measurements were taken with a rod protruding from the end of a caliper, as shown in the attached photo. The diameter of the metal rod was about 1/16 inch, which is an important dimension affecting its usefulness. The new version replaces the metal shaft with a thick plastic shaft that is about four times as thick. When I tried it, the new caliper was useless. I was glad I didn't throw away the old caliper as I had to go back to the old one to get the job done. Wheel bearing hole on an airplane model that matches the width of the wheel. The bore was 5/32" and the new caliper depth gauge was too wide to fit the bore. In the end, the old caliper measured the depth. The airplane model flies again and I'm off to my next competition.

Pros
  • Testing, measuring and checking
Cons
  • A few little things
