Cheap to make but good enough for the application

First off I have to say yes they are made pretty cheaply but they are actually ok and in general they are more than adequate application for me . I got them to replace the original cockpit fasteners on my Catalina 22 sailboat from the 80's. One thing you need to know is that they are designed to be flush mounted and require space behind your wiring surface. If you're installing in an RV where you're likely to have empty space inside the walls or above the ceiling, they'll work without modification. However, if you have a hard surface like mine (fiberglass with plywood filler) there is no way to slide the wiring. In this case your only options are 1- make a spacer ring out of wood or plastic or 2- redesign the base of the lantern. I have decided to change mine. When you remove the lens cap, you can loosen the three screws that hold the aluminum plate in place and swing it to the side. You can now use your Dremel tool to cut a large hole in the base (see image). When you reassemble the base you will have about 3/16 inch of free space between the board and your surface, which is enough to accommodate the wiring. You can't use the wire nuts that come with the kit, so plan on using heat shrink tubing on the connectors.

Pros
  • Performance and power
Cons
  • Ease of maintenance
