The product description doesn't say anything about using it only on painted surfaces but I noticed it after it was written in very small type on the back of the box Below it was not for wallpaper! But I think it makes sense as it essentially means that the wallpaper paste is carrying the weight and not the wall itself. I was trying to hang a picture and ended up ripping the (essential) wallpaper. So not only did I do irreparable damage, but I also had to drill a nail hole in the wall to hang the picture. Not quite as "damage free" as the description says, and that doesn't take into account the fact that it's not for wallpaper. Misleading 3M :-(
