Review on Hario Craft Coffee Clear Black by Ronald Taylor

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Favorite potting system on the market

I had a ceramic V60 that fell 8 feet and smashed about a month ago. I also have a Chemex and a stainless steel coffee dispensing system (no filter). I've paid more than double for my other filling systems, but this is the one I go to every morning. To understand why I love the Hario system so much, I compare it to my Chemex. The biggest issue with my Chemex is drainage - even with a fairly coarse grind, it's difficult to get water through the bottom. I should also mention that I use a professional grinder along with a Kruve screen, so my grind size is within 200 microns. . There are several ways to deal with this (1) You can choose a very coarse grind and brew a cup in about 3.5 minutes. This results in under-extraction of the beans and a great-tasting but noticeably weak cup of coffee. (2) You can stick to a reasonable grind size and brew longer (4+ minutes). This is my preferred method, but it often results in over-extracted beans and some bitterness. (3) You can use a finer grind and just stop brewing after 3-3.5 minutes. This will give you great (strong) flavor as the bean to water ratio is likely to be high. Topping up with hot water is usually a worthy compromise. All this to say that the Hario V60 is the only system that I know of that has solved this problem. Hario gets around this by adding small raised ribs inside the V60 that help a lot with drainage. The ridges help create an airflow that pushes water through the soil faster than Chemex. This allows me to use a finer grind that brings out the best flavor without bitterness. The manufacturer independence of the V60 is also a big plus. I've experimented a lot with different grinds, extraction times, and brewing methods, and being able to remove the lid and taste coffee at different stages of the brewing process has helped me learn and develop better brewing methods (e.g. three cups and change every minute between them or to see how the taste of the coffee changes with brewing time). If, like me, you're passionate about brewing the "perfect cup" of coffee, this product is for you.
