Review on Stanley Bailey Chisel Piece Leather by Michael Gonzales

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The handles are too big and plastic, the case isn't big - everything else is fine

I'm a hobby carpenter and I've had this set since 2016 I don't like or hate these chisels - they're ok, but basic. I will keep them now but if I were to buy them again I would buy something else. What's good: They're well built, their backs were decently flat and didn't require much work. The handles are made of wood and can be hit. They came to the peninsula as you would expect at this price point. The Bad: The handles are very large, particularly noticeable on the 1/4" chisel - better for coarser carpentry work than fine woodwork. The leather case is very impractical - the leather is not very stretchy and won't hold up with the included leather strap. Am I ended up cutting it into pieces and using the leather for other projects. The handles are lacquered dark (instead of the original wood color. Also, being lacquered makes them look very plastic. I suppose you could polish it up if you really wanted to. If I were to buy again I would look at: Stanley Sweetheart Set with much nicer pins (price is similar but you only get 4 chisels) Narex Premium set is cheaper and nicer pins and Narex is said to be good quality - to improve the steel quality Narex judges that are cryogenically hardened - although they are more expensive

Pros
  • Chisels are an improved design with a micro-ground blade tip
Cons
  • I don't remember, but there was something
