I bought two of these after several old, unnamed Prolific-based devices stopped working with the release of Windows 10. I found this to work great with a computer or other devices which have their drawbacks. The side of their power supply is connected to the AC neutral. Every device I tried to connect battery powered serial lines to didn't work. Then I took another brand of device and it worked fine. So if the signal ground wire, pin 5, is not at the same potential as the USB port ground, this device will not function. Well the two I had didn't work. So if you plan on connecting battery-powered devices, look elsewhere. Otherwise, you probably won't have a problem like most people do.
