Does not work well with battery powered devices.

I bought two of these after several old, unnamed Prolific-based devices stopped working with the release of Windows 10. I found this to work great with a computer or other devices which have their drawbacks. The side of their power supply is connected to the AC neutral. Every device I tried to connect battery powered serial lines to didn't work. Then I took another brand of device and it worked fine. So if the signal ground wire, pin 5, is not at the same potential as the USB port ground, this…

Pros
  • Easy Install
Cons
  • Doubtful

No chipset used - more details below. I bought it in 2013 and couldn't get it to allow communication between a late 2007 MacBook running OS x 10.6 and Parallax Basic Stamp 2. I used the programming app from the Parallax website on a Mac. Yes, it's an outdated Mac, but I was hoping to repurpose it as a brewery controller and datalogger headend. The Mac app is said to require an adapter with an FTDI chipset, and according to recent findings from the Q&A, this app has something else - supposedly…

Functional but unreliable

As a tool for connecting your laptop to serial control ports, this device does the job but isn't very durable. If you are like me, this device is mainly used in the field. In the field, these devices can fail during normal use. I bought two of these. On both devices, the case cracked and detached easily during normal use in the field, which is disappointing. The ties holding the hull together simply lack strength/reliability in the field. On a positive note, while both of my cases now detach…

Perfect solution for my upgrade

Easy connection to my old serial/parallel vinyl plotter. I have a 2000 32" Vinyl Express vinyl cutter that only had a serial port. I was able to use this adapter to upgrade my device to a USB port on a Windows 10 laptop. It was very easy after updating my old Win 2000 software, the Vinyl Express software, and then adding this port converter so that it could speak. I don't need more, even a CD was included with a driver that worked great. Don't throw away old serial port hardware if it still…

Need a driver for serial adapters

When I first connected this the LED came on and then went out quickly. I tried and tried to get my software to recognize the COM port but it kept saying it couldn't open it. I asked a question about this and many people replied. Many Thanks. I ended up calling Tripplite and after being referred to four different techs I found I needed to install a driver for it that would map a com port. Nothing wrong with that, except that there was nothing on the box that I needed to download the driver. Now…

Pros
  • Inspires confidence
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something

. one of the driver files for it. The errors I was getting were causing blue screen errors on startup, so the easy ways to get into safe mode in Windows 10 weren't available. I reinstalled the drivers and did a few other things and things seem to have settled down but check the driver files which are from 2010 after downloading them from the tripp-lite website. The website doesn't have any data for the drivers but I assume it's from 2010. The Keyspan Serial Assistant App has a build date of…

Pros
  • Excellent price.
Cons
  • Big and bulky.

Want a reliable means of connecting to industrial automation equipment that uses an RS-232 port without paying the Allen-Bradley surcharge for the 9300-USBS? Continue reading! I purchased this item solely for the purpose of retrofitting an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1400 to a machine that is still running a 1980's SLC 150. (Please. Don't ask.) I basically had to pull the program out of the venerable 150 and transcribe the instructions into RSLogix for the 1400. I won't bore you with the "joy" of…

Best USB Serial Port Adapter For Use With Control System Equipment

(Please see my update at the bottom of this review before considering purchasing this adapter) I have been using the Keyspan USA-19HS for many years. The first was bought after reading the recommendations of several control systems experts and I was not disappointed. Rockwell Automation sells its own version of the USB Serial Port Adapter (PN 9300-USBS) but costs about $130. Do not worry. Keyspan is inexpensive and proved to be 100% compatible with everything I needed to connect via a serial…
