We got this as an extension cord for my wife's office. She has too many devices to plug into the only outlet next to her desk. As an extension it is perfect. The strip is on her desk and her cord is plugged into an outlet. The band is metal and strong. With a power of 1800 watts, this strip can be used with a powerful microwave oven or other appliances. Six power outlets are plentiful, and the on/off button on the bar is an added convenience. I have many other extension cords: all plastic. I'm glad to have one that looks more solid. Most of these power strips have serious surge protection—they were pretty expensive, too. This metal power strip is also said to offer surge protection, but it's not enough to go by the reviews. We had a power surge incident a few years ago that destroyed some surge protectors - they smelled strongly of burnt plastic and we replaced them. There is no way to know for sure how it will work. This is a common problem with surge protectors: you hardly know they're there unless you need them.
