Although the description says "sturdy construction," the instructions that come with the French Press say it "should be hand washed in warm soapy water". The detachable glass jug seems sturdy enough to me, but I assume those who wrote the instructions know something about this device that encourages them to hand wash only. For me this is a big disadvantage. The press itself has no "cushioning material" around the rim to make contact with the side of the jug - it's a bit loose - although I haven't found any grinding in the press. he makes coffee. Pushing down on the plunger offers much less friction than most French Press coffee makers and is therefore much easier to "push". This device manages a full 32 ounces. Coffee, unlike some devices that seem to overstate their capabilities. It seems really well constructed and very attractive. But with the "no dishwasher" statement, this won't be my everyday coffee maker. However, I found it perfect for making a pitcher of "iced coffee". To do this, brew a regular coffee pot in a regular coffee maker, then place 8 tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee in a french press and add hot coffee 1 inch from the top of the french press pot. Stir with a wooden or plastic spoon as the directions say not to use metal as this will damage the glass. Then wait 4-5 minutes for the coffee to brew in the French Press. Then slowly push the plunger in until it stops. Pour the coffee concentrate from the French Press into a separate glass container (with a lid) - add cream and sugar to taste while the coffee is still hot. Then place the glass jar (not the french press jar) in the fridge to cool. When it cools down - a few hours - you'll have a good coffee concentrate that will keep on ice for a nice afternoon iced coffee. So for everyday use I would use a dishwasher-safe coffee machine, but for special occasions. or to make iced coffee, this french press works well.
