Review on πŸ”₯ CHP170 Cutter Soldering Station Bundle by Michael Thaxton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Excellent, powerful, fast and stable. (A factory reset seems to have been omitted from the instructions on purpose - I wonder why? Hmmm.)

This is an excellent soldering station. I used a Weller with temperature selectors that worked great. Thats much better. It is more powerful (70W) than the Weller and heats up much faster. And no tips for changing the temperature: just follow the instructions to set the new temperature and voila! The best station I've ever used. Now one thing is missing from the manuals and it's nowhere to be found (without digging around extensively on the web). Here's how to do a factory reset. As I discovered; It's easy to accidentally mess up the temperature offset. I got into a certain menu mode and moved the numbers up and down thinking I was changing the temperature. When I researched the manual, I found that I was actually adjusting the temperature offset! with no way of knowing how far the offset was - I'm stuck - yuck! How to reset? No answer other than using a $200 or $1000 Hakko thermometer to "recalibrate", hmm. very interesting. They seem to want to sell some extra thermometers. Hakko should be ashamed. I did a "secret" factory reset and checked on the spot with a borrowed high-temp thermometer. Here is the "secret" procedure to factory reset: Use the switch on the right to turn off the device. (There are two buttons on the front panel: [UP] button and [ENTER] button.) While holding down the [UP] button, press and hold the [ENTER] button at the same time. Then turn on the device while holding these buttons. Hold the buttons down (about 1 second) until the letter "A" flashes on the screen. Then release both buttons and press the [UP] button once. A blinking "U” should now appear on the screen. Now press the [ENTER] button once and that's it. The memory is cleared and factory reset, and the unit now defaults to 750Β°F heating -- Who needs to be told that they suddenly had to buy a thermometer that costs twice as much as a soldering station! ? For real? Come on, Hakko! You can do better! That annoyance aside, this device is superb and represents excellent value for money.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dubious purchase for the elderly
