For those debating an Alexa device with screen capabilities, whether you like the portal or not depends on what you intend to use it for. Generation) and 2 Facebook Portal+ for my home because I needed PA and drop-in capabilities and top notch video chat. So I have both: Echo Show (2nd Gen) outperforms Portal+ in overall functionality. It offers all the features of the previous model and more. I wanted some (or all) of my main units to act as a PA sometimes and also be able to 'drop in' when I'm not at home. I live in an apartment and have an 8 week old puppy soon. Even though I work from home, at some point if I need to run or walk an hour or two I can still access the camera and talk to her when she barks at the front door. At the moment the Facebook portal does not have this function. Also, with Echo Show, most of my smart devices don't require an external hub because it's built right into them. I'm not sure if it's in the portal. The show also has direct internet access. Just ask Alexa to play movie trailers, prime videos, etc. Viewing is good, but video call and drop-in quality is better than my security cameras (high quality too). Facebook Portal+'s display and AI camera technology is far superior to any other device I've used. I bought this for the calling function which is its main function. During a call, you no longer have to assign an operator during a call - it's completely hands-free and follows you around the room smoothly like a movie director. I was impressed with the range it followed me closely and would even follow the direction of your voice if you stepped out of frame. However, it's very limited in other features, and I expect more to come throughout the year once the "data leak" blah blah calms down a bit. Although the portal doesn't support Echo Show's PA and "drop-in" features, I can still easily manage all of my smart home devices and groups and use all of my routines with ease. If you're looking for all-round functionality and extras, the Echo Show (2nd) is for you. If video call quality is a priority, you still can't beat Portal+ - it far outshines everything else in this space.
