Review on πŸ“» Discover the Superior Performance of the Sangean ATS-909X2 FM/SW/MW/LW/Air Multi-Band Radio by Derick Johns

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Generally ok with some glaring issues.

Well that's a pretty ambiguous situation. Sangean fixed most of the problems with the 909X but left out many others. Positive: increased sensitivity due to the built-in antenna. Works well with external antennas. Good selectivity. Multiple bandwidths on AM and SW. Fastest RDS recording of any radio station I have and I have many radio stations. VHF and SW are excellent. The backlight can be switched on permanently. Very good sound quality. The SSB tuning step can be set to 20Hz, which is a big improvement over the 909X's 40Hz. RF gain control, much better than a simple Local/DX switch. The large display with lots of information is easy to read. Possibility to update the firmware in the future. Cons: Single bandwidth on SSB, unacceptable omission. The low volume of the SSB sound compared to the AM mode, you have to turn the volume up, very annoying. The recovered sound is good when you turn up the volume. Don't forget to turn it off when you switch modes! In my example, there were half a dozen "birds" on MW below 1000 kHz, making reception difficult or impossible on several frequencies. Other well-known reviewers have not experienced this issue, but none of my other portable radios have had this issue. Maybe this is a problem at my immediate location. For me this was a deal breaker and Sangean USA didn't help or wanted to help. They also told me the radio had weak SSB sound and said they couldn't fix it. I recommend dropping the ATS-909X2 and considering the Tecsun PL-990, which is my new pick.

Pros
  • Fine tuning and quick shift control
Cons
  • Hard to say
