Optional but doesn't mean it's a waste of time. I used this with Samsung 970 Pro. Good thing - I like how it looks after installation. It perfectly matches the black finish of my motherboard. It comes with a very easy to use thermal tape. This affected the temperature of my SSD 970. Around 8-9 degrees Fahrenheit. Bad thing. The metal rings that are supposed to hold it to the drive are useless. They slide up and down. Luckily, the thick rubber bands that come with the kit hold everything together really well. Don't expect sudden temperature changes. I consider this more of a gimmick for the user looking to add accessories to their computer. In general I am satisfied with the purchase. It only cost a few bucks and my 970 Pro lost a few degrees of temperature which can't hurt it. So don't read this as a negative review. I just wanted people to know what to buy and what their expectations should be.
