Review on Peak Design SL-AS-3 Slide Camera Strap Ash: Premium Comfort for Photographers by Anthony Payton

I expected more from this harness

I wanted to like it!. I have her 20L backpack and the Capture Clip. Colors, material and design are very nice. I figured the strap would fit perfectly and ordered one as soon as I realized they make straps to match my ash gray backpack. I didn't watch them work and just assumed they would be awesome. Not at all what I had hoped for. Disadvantages: 1. Two connection points. They are very easy to put on and take off, but there are two of them, not one like the Black Rapids. I'm so used to quickly disconnecting, removing and then reconnecting. This belt is not suitable for this. I really like getting off quickly as I use LCD mirrorless cameras to get the best positions and angles where the straps are always in the way. If you choose to slim down, you will have a dangling strap that falls to the right of your shoulder or nape of the neck as both ends dangle freely. With a strap design like the Black Rapids.2, that's not a problem. Have two dangling plastic strap connectors that don't match any of the other Peak designs or colors. Round black plastic cylinders with a red border around them. My backpack and clip are ash gray, brown leather, silver polished aluminum, blue accents, etc. Not red and black plastic. Dangling plugs hanging from the camera also look ridiculous. Terrible aesthetics and super annoying.3. Another unique mounting plate. I have a platter from a Capture Clip setup and was imagining a strap that might have had a retainer to snap the capture platter into place. That would mean no dangling connectors, a single connection point, and a nicer look that would make everything so much better. Another option that would be even better is a mount built into the strap that fits the smaller plate that this strap comes with. It just could have been done a lot better.4. Metal levers/levers located at the sliding points. They look cool, but perform practically no functions. They don't really let the strap slide easily. Nice and easy to push. They're just there to look cool. I like the look but I hope it looks more than cool. Edit: 5 Forgot to add that you must use an Allen key to attach or detach. That means you can't quickly remove the plate unless you have an Allen key in your pocket everywhere. I'm amazed they didn't come up with a design that allows your fingers to relax and clench like so many others. I will definitely be returning the strap in the hope that one day they will have a more attractive and consistent design. .ie the lack of dangling connectors and the ability to snap the camera directly into the strap using the plate.

Pros
  • Solid construction
Cons
  • Nothing here
