Review on πŸ“Ό Maxell C90 Professional Industrial Communicator Series Audio Cassette Tapes - 5 Pack by Daniel Anderson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

They're good depending on what you're recording

Bought these as I've recently revived cassettes as a niche hobby and thought it might be interesting, a few mixed ones Recording cassettes like I did a few years ago because I remembered how much fun it was. They're "normal" depending on what you're recording. By that I mean I've tried recording multiple genres of music and whether I turn off the noise reduction or try Dolby B or Dolby C (Dolby C usually helps even the worst cassettes, but not with these), the highs just aren't there . , and I use a fairly good quality JVC soundboard. It also seems like you can't use them as loud as the similarly priced TDK D-Series Type I. The D-Series TDK can do well in the +2 and even +4 range for some types of music , and they handle it very well, but the Maxell communicators are prone to distortion at this level, which is surprising given their label of "professional". /industrial. The band is "chocolate brown" in color, no darker than the TDK above, and is generally a way of judging the quality of a good Type I. To be honest Maxell and as far as I can remember I've used a lot of different tapes Process . In the 90's the UR series was just as good as the D series when it came to Type I. I still have plenty of them on old records and they still sound as good as they did when I recorded them in 1994, but honestly the best cassettes from Maxell were XL-II and XL-IIS - that's where they shone, but they're becoming no longer made, so there's only new old stock, and they're expensive. Unfortunately, the Communicator series just isn't made for music. Another thing I don't like is that the strap unwinds inside the case with a simple movement (see picture). This is not usually a factor in a well-made cartridge. These factors are just my opinion based on my own experience. They're better than the cheap ONN brand and might be fine for talk radio, dictation or use in a cheap voice recorder, but I can't take back my recommendation for those who are serious about recording good quality music. They just don't handle frequencies very well and you might be disappointed. If you're still in doubt, buy two packs to try and then you'll see what I mean. In my honest opinion, even the Sony HF Type I is better than this.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Good mostly but...
