Great performance improvement, just one incompatible part

I just installed this kit on my '98 Toyota Tacoma 2.4L DLX RWD manual transmission with 228,000 miles. It will be a little early to comment on MPG and overall performance. I have to agree with current reviews that you can definitely hear a difference on the first run after an air suction setup. With increased airflow, my stock exhaust sounds a lot louder between 2100-2800 rpm. , because all this air has to go out too. Throttle response has improved, as has every reviewer posted to date. I'm having a lot of fun testing this part, so I'm going to push it a bit. I read the reviews on this site before purchasing and was concerned that I might get another kit that had a rubber coupling from the intake to the throttle body. The body would be too big. Spring. The stock throttle body measures approximately 2.75 inches and the K&N coupler measures 3 inches on either side. As several reviewers wrote, it ended up being too big. I ran to Autozone and bought a Specter 3" to 2.5" adapter for about $7-8. On the 2.5" side, do not use the Specter adjustable mounting ring as it is too tight. Replace with the 3" ring from the K&N kit. With a 1/4 inch difference you should be able to stretch and massage the clutch on the throttle body and tighten everything. I couldn't reuse my standard hitch as it was a bit old and I ripped it after pulling too hard. Everything else was fine except for the clutch. It would have been 5 stars if K&N had included the correct size clutch.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Clarity
