I used a transparent background, a text image for t-shirts. I thought I should use dark transfer paper for dark fabrics but the result wasn't very good. The background was solid white and the color of the fabric started to flow into the background (but not enough to completely change color). Through trial and error and then browsing the site I found that light carbon paper works best on dark fabrics as well (for transparent background images only!) while not flipping the image over and placing it face up on the fabric. Cover with parchment and then iron. The contrast isn't great (I used black ink), but at least the background is "mostly" transparent. This would probably be fine for canvas fabrics or things that cannot be worn. This is a DIY project so I can only expect mediocre quality. If you really want it to look great, buy a heat press or have it professionally printed.
