Carpenter's pegs have two main characteristics. (1) Alignment to align the edges of adjacent sections, and (2) Reinforcing joinery PROVIDED that the dowels are tightened securely. To use 1/2" dowels you will need to use a 1/2" drill bit. A 1/2" drill bit will make a .500 +/- .002" diameter hole (assuming proper clamping and a good enough bit are used). These rivets have an AVERAGE diameter of .486 inches. At an average size and gauge of .007 inches, these dowels float in the glue rather than being firmly attached to the wood with glue. Too sloppy landing! They are slotted, eliminating the need for glue extrusion addition. The ridges on the grooves ensure a tight fit on the inside diameter of the hole, and the grooves provide channels for the glue to drain and form a good bond between the dowel and the wood. THESE HAIRPINS ARE TERRIBLE. If you can turn the piece of wood upside down and the dowel can fall out of the hole, that's bad! Keep in mind!
