Review on Panasonic DMC FZ70 Digital Optical Stabilized by Andy Hearshman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Unbelievable deal but make sure you know what you are getting.

I've had a slightly larger one for years Camera and use it all the time with very good results for Facebook Pictures. I typically use autofocus to take pictures and downsize standard JPEG images by 5K to about a third of the original size for publication. I haven't had any luck posting videos mainly due to a very slow internet connection which takes too long to upload a video of any size to be worth it. From time to time I use the very cumbersome so-called manual focus with a tripod to shoot flowers etc. to photograph with different results. You get incredible value for your money, but you still get what you pay for - 20-1200mm zoom, RAW images (require tons of post-processing and vignetting correction, etc. video), surprisingly good macro capabilities (focus on 1 cm) and decent color rendering. I like slightly oversaturated colors and use the Lucky setting for most shots (sorry pros). De gustibus etc. A zoom equivalent to 1200mm isn't very useful unless you have a reason to covertly photograph large objects from a distance in daylight. This didn't help me at all with birds on the Potomac and I find that for most subjects in good broad daylight you don't want to use more than half that magnification. Still, the lens is very flexible and gives you amazing FOV choices for everyday subjects. The aperture is just five points at full zoom - not the widest - and the tiny sensor delivers softer focus across the board, which is what you'd expect - softer and louder, IMHO, than some comparably sized cellphones and pocket cameras. Low light performance is pretty poor, but the camera is far from useless in low light. On the other hand, the 20mm wide-angle lens is very useful for both indoor and building photography. Add that to the amazing macro abilities and you have two very strong points in favor of this gear. There is a new and updated version of this camera, DC-FZ80, which adds 4K TBD quality videos. Focus stacking and two more megapixels. on the sensor, (I think) an external microphone and a few other significant improvements. The same old lens. Apparently there is no more built-in memory (?). Initial reviews suggest that image quality is still a little below average from a professional point of view, but a purchase price of around $400 definitely makes the new model a steal, if not quite as good as this model. a set of in-camera special effects filters, some of which are fun, although the effects easily match or beat Photoshop or Gimp. I probably won't upgrade but would definitely consider the FZ80 as opposed to the FZ70, today when I'm upgrading from a point-and-shoot pocket model or a limited-lens cell phone. The added functionality might not justify an upgrade, but it certainly will improve the first purchase. This old model is still a steal and a good deal if you know what you're getting. If you're on a budget and looking for a good advanced camera for students, consider buying the FZ70 while it's still available. I've had more fun with mine than the Monkey Barrel and it shows no signs of wear. NB - All attached images have been slightly edited in an old version of Photoshop and resized for web publication. I'm attaching a raw video clip of the women's march. Relata refero - do not judge, but you won't etc. You could buy the FZ70 while it's still available.
