Jack of all trades, consummate expert

This is the Swiss army knife of Pentax lenses. If you can't take your entire tool box with you, this is what you need. It's good at almost anything - or at least good enough for the person who only takes a camera body with them. It has the longest zoom range of any weatherproof Pentax lens. So if you don't want to miss a shot but don't want to mess up your camera by swapping out WR lenses as needed depending on the weather, this is the lens to have. It's not a "macro" lens, but with my old K-5 I captured the fly so clearly I could see the hairs on its back. It's not a "super" 15x zoom, but it's a true WR lens with seals where it counts. I shot in the snow - how it fell. I took pictures in water splashes. It can take wide-angle shots and then zoom in 7.5X and take close-up shots. The "softness" in the corners is mostly achieved at the longest end of the zoom range, so I use normal wide-angle settings for landscapes and it works great. But when you're photographing people, when you zoom in, the image is still very sharp in the center, where the person's face would be, and so the "softness" in the corners is like the nice bokeh of a fast (expensive) lens . And when I use it instead of a 200mm lens to shoot something far away, I still crop the corners and leave the center sharp. Focusing is fast enough and surprisingly quiet. The construction is quite strong but light. Whether you're shooting on the beach, in the snow, or in the humidity, with the wind kicking up dust and dirt, water dripping, or kids knocking over tall glasses of sugary drinks next to your camera, this is your lens, especially if you're shooting landscapes, portraits, zooms and macro photography with the same lens. There will be times when you'll be very glad you took it with you, rather than a bag full of expensive, limited-use lenses that can be ruined in inclement weather.
